How do we tell the good from the bad when they look the same? Elemental Witch and Magic Shop owner, Samantha Hawthorne, faces her future with the knowledge she was raised, taught, and groomed by the very evil responsible for the disappearance of her mother. Threads of Arcane Magic linger alongside the guilt Samantha endures for killing an innocent in her failed pursuit for revenge. Now Clerics, the Witch’s Judiciary Branch, appear and request her aid in proving the self-appointed Witch Queen of New Orleans possesses the rumored Malleus Maleficarum, The Witch’s Hammer. They believe her command of the book’s Arcane power is responsible for the death of three Witch Elders. But something else is rising in the city as reports of ghost sightings and evil shadows increase. Faced with a lingering fear her own use of Arcane Magic has tainted her in some way, mounting pressure with the threat of a warlock from the Clerics, and suspicion that the evil that escaped her is still influencing her decisions, Samantha calls upon her friends to weave their unique magic together to stop the rampage of Elemental Shadows.
Elemental Shadows is the second book in the Eldritch Files series.
The brain sciences are influencing our understanding of human behavior as never before, from neuropsychiatry and neuroeconomics to neurotheology and neuroaesthetics. Many now believe that the brain is what makes us human, and it seems that neuroscientists are poised to become the new experts in the management of human conduct. Neuro describes the key developments--theoretical, technological, economic, and biopolitical--that have enabled the neurosciences to gain such traction outside the laboratory. It explores the ways neurobiological conceptions of personhood are influencing everything from child rearing to criminal justice, and are transforming the ways we "know ourselves" as human beings. In this emerging neuro-ontology, we are not "determined" by our neurobiology: on the contrary, it appears that we can and should seek to improve ourselves by understanding and acting on our brains. Neuro examines the implications of this emerging trend, weighing the promises against the perils, and evaluating some widely held concerns about a neurobiological "colonization" of the social and human sciences. Despite identifying many exaggerated claims and premature promises, Neuro argues that the openness provided by the new styles of thought taking shape in neuroscience, with its contemporary conceptions of the neuromolecular, plastic, and social brain, could make possible a new and productive engagement between the social and brain sciences. Explores the moral dilemmas posed by disparities in health across nations Contributors to this volume considers whether health inequalities are a result of global distributive inequalities and are therefore of concern to those promoting global redistributive justice. Case studies include > The migration of health care practitioners from developing to developed nations > The impact of climate change > The social determinants of health outcomes > The effects of pharmaceutical legislation--and international bad practices more generally--on securing access to life-saving drugs in the developing world > The differential effect of these practices on men and women, especially with respect to HIV/AIDS These cases are explored alongside theoretical questions of definition, responsibility and moral relevance to discover the scope of responsibilities that developed nations have towards poor health in developing nations.
Course of Mirrors an odyssey by Ashen Venema “I was bridge, river, riverbed and water falling from the cliff, the aria of water. I was air, breeze and water dust rising. I was mirror to mirrors yet looked from beyond mirrors. Behind my eyes a truth flashed.” Set in a mythical time on earth, Course of Mirrors follows the story of a rebellious young woman, Ana, in search of her destiny. Ana spends years of her life in isolation and caught in a rift between the disparate realms of her parents. Her spirit is affirmed by Cara, her soul-sister living in the twentieth century, who beckons her across time. They have a task together, for which Ana must travel west. The night before her covert departure, Ana is given a confidential letter that burdens her adventure with secrecy. Ana travels between her parents’ realms in disguise, crossing dangerous bridges and battling dark fears. She evades the ominous plans of a maverick preacher and shortly after meets her first love, Luke. He and the preacher are twins, though both are ignorant of this. As the two brothers fight to win Ana and betrayals begin to unravel, Ana attempts to bridge the gap between love and power. Course of Mirrors is a gripping and enchanting story of a young woman’s odyssey. Its overriding theme of a quest for belonging has a universal recognisability and appeal, and will be continued in Ashen’s sequel, Shapers, in which Ana’s journey continues into future worlds. Inspired by 1001 Nights, and writers like Ursula Le Guin, Ashen Venema’s debut novel will appeal to fans of fantasy novels and those who enjoy coming-of-age mysteries.
